Wood-plastic composites, commonly referred to as WPC, is a hybrid material which merges the advantages of wood and those of plastic. Despite not being very well-known as compared to the classic building materials, it has numerous advantages.
It is water resistant
Wood Plastic Composite is made of wood fibre and plastic. The result of this mixture is a material which has a very high water resistance. This is a considerable asset for a construction material. Outdoor benches, tables can be made out of it.
The material is very easy to maintain
Wood Plastic Composite requires very little care as it has a strong resistance against weather conditions. Moreover, due to the wood/plastic mixture, it does not attract bugs and is also easily cleaned. PVC – PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) core in flooring represents a more traditional form of vinyl flooring. Composed entirely of synthetic materials, it lacks the composite structure found in WPC or SPC. The core is usually softer, offering less durability, especially in high-traffic areas. Additionally, its water resistance is moderate but not on par with its composite counterparts. One of its major advantages lies in its cost-effectiveness; it's generally less expensive than both WPC and SPC. However, its thermal stability is limited, meaning it's more susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, which can lead to warping or curling over time.
SPC – The core in SPC flooring is renowned for its robustness and durability. Comprised of a blend of limestone and stabilisers, this material is engineered to be exceptionally hard, making it incredibly resistant to impacts, scratches, and dents. This makes SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) ideal for high-traffic and commercial areas. It also boasts excellent water resistance, comparable to WPC, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. In terms of thermal stability, SPC outperforms both PVC and WPC, remaining stable under varying temperature conditions. However, the rigidity of the SPC core means it is less comfortable underfoot and offers moderate sound insulation.
WPC Floor vs. SPC Floor: The Similarities
So where are the similarities? Well, both are composed of the same construction featuring a wear layer on top, vinyl and rigid core layers in the middle, and a base layer of rubber, cork, or foam. In this case, SPC and WPC feature an EVA attached foam. In addition, by utilizing impervious materials during composition, waterproof flooring is constructed. This resistance to liquids is the cherry on top of an already durable, long-lasting floor.
The top layers of WPC and SPC are also incredibly realistic with a sculpted surface texture emulating its inspiration; natural hardwood. From the eye-catching hues and undertones to the blooming beauty of its construction, WPC and SPC flooring are both excellent choices for any space.
How is WPC Floor Made?
WPC flooring consists of four key layers and each serves a distinct purpose:
Wear layer
This top layer protects against scratches, stains, and wear, maintaining the floor's appearance and durability.
Design layer
Situated below the wear layer, it features high-definition images that mimic natural wood, stone, or other materials, offering aesthetic versatility.
Core layer
The heart of WPC flooring, made from a mixture of wood fibers and plastic resins, provides stability, waterproof properties, and comfort underfoot.
Base layer
This bottom layer, often made of cork or foam, adds sound insulation and helps smooth out subfloor imperfections, enhancing comfort and ensuring a level surface.
Requirements Before Installing WPC Floor
Carefully examine the flooring prior to installation for color, finish, and quality. Ensure adequate lighting for proper inspection of the product prior to installation. If the flooring is deemed unacceptable by the purchaser, contact your nearest dealer immediately to arrange for replacement parts. The manufacturer does not accept responsibility for flooring installed with visible defects. Prior to installation of any flooring, the installer must ensure that the jobsite and subfloor meet the requirements previously mentioned. The manufacturer is not responsible for flooring defects caused by unsatisfactory jobsite and/or subfloor conditions.
Crawl spaces must be a minimum of 18" (46 cm) from the ground to the underside of the joists. A black polyethylene film ground cover of 6-20 mm is to be used as a vapor barrier with joints lapped 6" (16 cm) and sealed with moisture resistant tape. The crawl space should have a perimeter venting equal to a minimum of 1.5% of the crawl space square footage. These vents should be properly located to foster cross ventilation. Where necessary, local regulations take precedent.
Room temperature and humidity of installation area should be consistent with normal, year-round living conditions for at least one week prior to installation. Maintaining an optimum room temperature of 70° F and a humidity range of 30-50% is recommended. The flooring should be one of the last items installed in any construction or remodel projects.
Exposing WPC flooring to the sun can have both positive and negative effects, depending on various factors such as the quality of the material, installation method, and climate conditions. Generally, WPC flooring is designed to withstand outdoor exposure to some extent, but prolonged and intense sunlight exposure can lead to certain issues.
One potential concern with exposing WPC flooring to the sun is fading. Like many other materials, WPC flooring may experience color fading over time when subjected to UV radiation from the sun. This can result in a duller appearance and loss of vibrancy in the flooring, especially if it lacks UV protection. However, high-quality WPC flooring often incorporates UV inhibitors in its composition to minimize fading and maintain its color intensity even under direct sunlight.
Another issue is thermal expansion. WPC flooring can expand and contract with temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to the sun's heat can exacerbate this phenomenon. In extreme cases, excessive heat absorption can cause WPC flooring to expand beyond its normal limits, leading to buckling, warping, or distortion. Proper installation techniques, including leaving adequate expansion gaps and using appropriate fasteners, can help mitigate the risk of thermal expansion-related damage.
Additionally, exposure to sunlight may affect the structural integrity of WPC flooring over time. While WPC is generally resistant to moisture and rot, prolonged exposure to UV radiation can weaken the material and make it more susceptible to cracking, splintering, or degradation. This is especially true in regions with intense sunlight and high temperatures.
The impact of sunlight exposure on WPC floors varies depending on whether the flooring is installed indoors or outdoors. In indoor settings, controlled environmental conditions and limited sunlight exposure typically mitigate temperature concerns associated with WPC flooring. However, in outdoor applications, direct sunlight, fluctuating temperatures, and exposure to the elements can amplify heat retention and thermal expansion issues in WPC floors.
What Is the Life of WPC Flooring?
The WPC lifespan can reach 10-15 years. The longevity of WPC decking is attributed to its composition of wood fibers and plastic, which provides resistance to moisture, rot, insects, and fading from UV rays.
The low maintenance requirement and resistance to chemicals and stains further contribute to its long lifespan. With these qualities, WPC decking offers a durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional wood decking, ensuring a long-lasting outdoor flooring solution.
Composite decking doesn't require any high-strength or time-consuming maintenance, occasional sweep or wash cleaning may be necessary to keep your deck looking great. Once again, composite means simplicity.
To keep the composite deck clean, all you need to do is sweep off the debris and hose off the dirt. Avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals and metal-edged shovels on the composite deck, which can scratch and damage the deck boards.
